The Predecessors of the QRI Ipswich
Heritage Model Railway Club.
|
The conception of the then embryonic QRI Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club in 2001 was an
auspicious occasion for railway modellers in Ipswich and Ipswich environs.
There is certainly a need for such a modelling and social club, for in a city the size of
Ipswich, population over 70,000, there are certainly many like-minded souls who are interested
in meeting their fellow railway modellers and who feel a need to congregate together and share
this mutual passion.
So the formation of our club has been long overdue, and the continued and rising interest in
its endeavours by a growing number of members and visitors augurs well for its continued
existence.
One may then have occasion to wonder if the present club is indeed the first of its kind in
Ipswich. Did it have a predecessor, or even predecessors? Well, yes indeed, it did have a
predecessor and was similarly anticipated by various groups of friends and small groups who
share this common interest in railway modelling.
Unfortunately, little conclusive evidence can be found of their existence, for indeed such
groups are so informal and even transitory that written and photographic evidence is unlikely
to be found, even if such evidence ever existed.
There was an Ipswich Model Railway Club mentioned in the 1975 edition of the Ipswich Green
Pages, but a letter to its secretary at the time was returned marked "Address Unknown".
The search for details of railway modellers and their activities in clubs and groups in
Ipswich is indeed elusive and reliance must be placed on readers of this who have any
information or recollections of any railway modelling activities in our city.
Please contact the club via Denver Lacey (
denver.lacey@yahoo.com.au) if you have any details of other clubs, past or present,
that operate within the Ipswich area.
