HUMBLE BEGININGS - by Tony Hales.
Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club The first HO scale "layout" the club was able to run on was a what I call my "between layouts" layout. It is a 6 feet by 2 feet diorama type module. I built this module when I had to pull down a layout because of moving and, at the time, didn't have enough space to build another layout. Building the module helped me to keep active in the hobby and allowed me to try a few things I hadn't tried before, such as a different theme and modelling techniques.
The theme of the module is meant to represent a small, Rocky Mountain type scene. The module has plenty of pine trees and I have tried to capture the earth and foliage colouring found in this region. The run from West to East across the module sees a train come out of Tunnel One and cross the bridge over Mud Creek. Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club
Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club As you continue along, the train then passes through the town scene, dividing Main Street, with its mix of stores and offices on the southern side of the line. Looking over towards the North is the plumbing supply store and the garage.
As we roll on further we pass the station depot, situated on the northside of the tracks and on the southside sits the old disused United Grain Growers wooden grain elevator and shed. Viewblocks are provided by the tunnel at one end and the grain complex at the other. This gives the impression of the trains coming from somewhere and then going elsewhere without just disappearing through a visible hole in the backdrop. Of course this project is not yet finished (are they ever), the track still needs ballasting and a lot more detail work needs to be done. Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club
So the HO scale group had something we could continuously run on, I made up two end sections and a straight section to make an oval loop of track. Ipswich Heritage Model Railway Club This made the overall size a rather modest 11 feet by 5 feet, but the guys didn't seem to mind because we could now bring our trains along to club meetings and give them a run.
